Signed into law July 30, 1965, Medicaid was enacted to provide healthcare services to low-income children deprived of parental support, their caretaker relatives, the elderly, the blind, and individuals with disabilities.

In California, Medicaid is called Medi-Cal.  In Arizona it is AHCCCS (Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System), and specifically for seniors, ALTCS (Arizona Long Term Care System). Although similar in many ways, there
are slight differences between the programs in each state, because each state determines how they will administer the Medicaid program within their borders.
